How to Calculate Wallpaper Rolls
Follow this four-step method for any room:
- Measure the perimeter of all walls to be papered (in feet).
- Multiply perimeter by ceiling height to get total wall area in sq ft.
- Subtract roughly 15 sq ft per standard door and 12 sq ft per window.
- Divide remaining area by usable sq ft per roll, then add 10–15% for waste (15–20% for large pattern repeats).
Formula: Rolls needed = (Wall area in sq ft ÷ Usable sq ft per roll) × 1.10 to 1.15
Roll Coverage by Width
Usable coverage per roll depends on roll width and length. Standard US single rolls contain about 36 sq ft printed, but trimming losses leave roughly 29–30 sq ft of usable coverage. European single rolls are sold as a set length (typically 10 m / 33 ft) at varying widths.
| Roll Width | Roll Length (typical) | Total Area (sq ft) | Total Area (sq m) | Usable After Trimming (sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 in (46 cm) — US standard | 27 ft (8.2 m) | 40.5 | 3.76 | ~29 |
| 20.5 in (52 cm) — US common | 27 ft (8.2 m) | 46.1 | 4.28 | ~33 |
| 27 in (69 cm) — US wide | 27 ft (8.2 m) | 60.8 | 5.65 | ~43 |
| 53 cm (21 in) — European single | 33 ft (10 m) | 58.4 | 5.30 | ~48 |
Rolls Needed by Room Size
| Room Size (ft) | 8 ft Ceiling — US Single Rolls | 9 ft Ceiling — US Single Rolls | 8 ft Ceiling — EU Double Rolls |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 | 9 – 10 | 10 – 11 | 5 – 6 |
| 12 × 12 | 12 – 13 | 13 – 14 | 6 – 7 |
| 14 × 14 | 14 – 15 | 16 – 17 | 7 – 8 |
| 15 × 20 | 17 – 19 | 19 – 21 | 9 – 10 |
Figures include a 10% waste allowance and assume one door and two windows per room. Add an extra roll or two for large pattern repeats (12 in repeat or larger).
