Resolution Standards at a Glance

Screen resolution describes the number of pixels a display contains, expressed as width × height. More pixels means a sharper image, but sharpness also depends on screen size — the same 4K panel looks crisper on a 27-inch monitor than on a 75-inch TV viewed from the same distance.

Pixels Per Inch (PPI) for Common Screen Sizes

PPI measures pixel density. The formula is: PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal inches. Higher PPI means sharper text and images. The table below shows PPI for a 24-inch and a 27-inch monitor at each resolution, as well as a typical 55-inch TV.

Why PPI Matters More Than Resolution Alone

A 4K 75-inch TV has 59 PPI, while a Full HD 24-inch monitor has 92 PPI — meaning the smaller screen is actually denser. At typical TV viewing distances (8–10 feet), 59 PPI is fine. At arm's length from a desktop monitor, 92 PPI is the minimum most people find comfortable. For graphic design work, target at least 110 PPI.

Aspect Ratios Beyond 16:9

Ultrawide monitors use a 21:9 ratio (typically 2560 × 1080 or 3440 × 1440). Super-ultrawide panels reach 32:9 (5120 × 1440). Smartphone screens often run taller ratios like 19.5:9 or 20:9 to accommodate modern notch and gesture-navigation designs. Content shot at 16:9 displays with letterboxing on ultrawide screens unless the app supports the wider ratio.
